A Good Samaritan School For Girls

Compassion Hospitality Respect

Faith & Mission

The spiritual heritage of the College is formed by the story of compassion of the Good Samaritan, the Patronage of Mary under the title of Our Lady of Lourdes, and a strong Benedictine tradition of the Good Samaritan Sisters, emphasising values that support holistic living.

There are two main components that express the College Mission Statement - Spirituality and Service.

Spirituality

Lourdes Hill College celebrates the faith of the Catholic school community. Students are encouraged to live out the practical Benedictine values of genuine community, compassion, effective listening and moral stability, valuing prayer and peace and to focus on stewardship of the local and natural environment.

The student badge received by students during the first days at Lourdes Hill states, "Respice Stellam Voca Mariam" which means: "Look to the star and call upon Mary". Attachment to the patroness of Lourdes Hill College, Mary Our Lady of Lourdes, is mirrored in the College Prayer and Hymn which are used to express a love of life and learning. These derive from a conscious appreciation of all the gifts given by God and faith in Mary, Mother of Jesus and universal Mother. These are core elements of the spirituality of Lourdes Hill and are reiterated through the Hymn and the Prayer during times the school comes together for events such as Lourdes Day, Ash Wednesday and Easter, Reconciliation Liturgy and Mass for Saint Benedict, the Saint Vincent de Paul Mass for Sharing, and our Graduation and Awards Night at the end of the year.

The school strives to live and breathe the Benedictine values in our Mission Statement. The opportunity to present a prayer liturgy on assembly and a lunchtime prayer liturgy in the Chapel is given to different Home Groups each week. Each event held in our school commences with recognition of the traditional owners of the land we gather on. Particular core Benedictine values become the hallmark and central theme for our prayer life.

On Monday mornings before school, prayer is conducted in Najara, our quiet place, to begin the week. Prayer is conducted daily by students in each Home Group to start the day with serenity and consciousness of God's presence. Spirituality Days take place through the year to deepen students' awareness of where they are on our spiritual journeys and to reflect on where God can be seen through goodness in everyday life; these "retreat" experiences are also a way to connect with our inner spiritual selves.

At Lourdes Hill, each girl's faith is given the attention and care needed in order for her to flourish into a strong minded and moral young woman by the night of her Graduation. The College is regarded highly for the many opportunities provided to the girls to live out their faith through significant social justice action.

Service

Students are constantly reminded that the Gospel, Benedictine way involves a call to service. The College has an extensive co-curricular program that allows students to develop skills and be part of a group. Students are encouraged to become members of service groups which come under the umbrella of "Bene Servire", which means "to serve well".

The College offers service groups including St Vincent de Paul, Human Rights Group, SPARC (who look after the environment), Mission Mexico (who sponsor an orphanage in Mexico), L'Arche (who provide community and friendship to disabled adults), and STAR (which is an outreach to indigenous communities where Good Samaritan Sisters are located in Santa Teresa).

Some classes leave the College during their Religious Education lessons to engage in Service Learning in local primary schools. This involves helping the children to read and tutoring them about literacy and numeracy. Other students may visit nursing homes like the Clem Jones Centre to interact with its elderly residents. When girls reach Year 11 and 12, they are given the opportunity to participate in homeless outreach groups such Sarah's, Rosie's and the Tongan Outreach Program.

Each year, Lourdes Hill participates in Project Compassion to assist Caritas Australia, a Catholic agency that is dedicated to spreading love and compassion around the world by building infrastructure in countries in poverty. Thanks to the donations made, Lourdes Hill annually raises fantastic amounts of money for our brothers and sisters in struggling communities here in Australia and around the world. Some other events are initiatives of the St Vincent de Paul Service Group and include the Winter Appeal, the annual Can Drive and the Christmas Appeal. These trigger wonderful generosity from the Lourdes Hill community. Lourdes Hill is strongly committed to upholding our Reconciliation Action Plan and engages in practical activities to help in closing the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Australia. Recently we have begun to focus on the Good Samaritan Transitional Housing Project which helps "at risk" women and children find temporary accommodation - our annual "Good Samaritan Day" raises money for this project.

Because Lourdes Hill was founded by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, an order of religious women who follow the Rule of St Benedict and whose aim is to serve others in the spirit of the Good Samaritan, staff, students and parents see it as a major responsibility to act just as the Good Samaritan did.

Laptop Program

The 1-to-1 Laptop program at Lourdes Hill College involves each Year 9 student being provided with a Laptop for use at school and at home, software as specified and a bag, at the beginning of the academic year.
