Reconciliation Week is always a highlight on the Mirragin calendar. Mirragin students worked closely with the STAR service group, led by Ms Davies, to offer a range of meaningful activities throughout the week.
We began by attending the annual Sorry Day Service at the Wynnum foreshore, where our Reconciliation Captain, Kalani Thurgate, delivered a moving reflection on the significance of this important day for all Australians. We also acknowledged Sorry Day as a whole school by creating a garden of hibiscus flowers in the beds above Seiwa Court. It was heartening to see so many students engage in this simple act of remembrance, pausing to read the messages of hope written on each flower.
On Tuesday, we held a lunchtime corroboree in the GSC. A range of stations were on offer, including bracelet making, nail painting, hoopla throwing, and banner making, each with a focus on closing the gap, particularly in the areas of education and health. We also hosted a sausage sizzle to raise much-needed funds for the remote Santa Teresa First Nations community in the Northern Territory. A huge thank you to Hendriks House, who contributed to the Wednesday bake sale organised by the STAR service group to raise additional funds.
On Thursday, we welcomed Mirragin Parents and Caregivers to the Reconciliation Assembly, alongside visitors from Balmoral State High School, Iona College and St Laurence’s College. It was especially exciting to include our Year 5 and 6 students in this celebration for the first time; they were a wonderful addition to our traditional dance group.
We closed the week with Floral Friday, encouraging all students to wear colourful shirts and floral leis to celebrate the vibrant culture of the Torres Strait Islands.
