Helping Your Daughter Prepare for Exams: A Parent’s Guide to Support and Success

As exams approach, many students will feel the pressure mounting—and as parents, your support can make all the difference. While academic success is important, emotional wellbeing and healthy habits are just as crucial. Here’s how you can help your daughter navigate exam season with confidence, clarity, and calm.

Start by encouraging her to begin early. Cramming the night before rarely leads to lasting success. Instead, help her map out a study schedule two to three weeks in advance, breaking subjects into manageable chunks. Tools like Google Calendar can make planning more engaging, especially when color-coded and personalized. Your gentle reminders and encouragement to stick to the plan can help her stay on track without feeling overwhelmed.

Understanding the material is far more effective than rote memorisation. Ask her about what she’s learning—invite her to explain concepts to you or even to a sibling. This not only reinforces her understanding but also shows that you’re genuinely interested in her progress. Visual aids like mind maps or diagrams can help her grasp complex ideas, and you can support her by providing quiet space and resources to create them.

Memory techniques like active recall and spaced repetition are proven to boost retention. If she’s using apps like Quizlet or Anki, ask her how they work and celebrate her efforts to study smarter. Encourage regular breaks using methods like the Pomodoro Technique (25 minutes of study followed by a 5-minute break) and gently steer her away from distractions like social media during those breaks.

Sleep is one of the most underrated tools for academic success. Help her prioritize rest by creating a calming bedtime routine—limit screen time before bed, suggest relaxing music or meditation, and ensure she’s getting 7–9 hours of sleep each night. A well-rested mind is sharper, more focused, and better equipped to handle stress.

Remind her that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. Whether it’s joining a study group, using the colleges homework clubs, asking questions in class, or watching educational videos online, being proactive is empowering. You can also help her find resources or connect with teachers if she’s struggling with a particular subject.

With your support, she won’t just survive exam season—she’ll thrive.

Supporting Our Year 12 Students Ahead of External Exams

As we approach the final stretch of the Year 12 academic year, Lourdes Hill College is proud to celebrate the initiative and dedication shown by our senior students during the recent school holiday study program.

In preparation for the External Exams (27 October – 14 November), the Benedict Library was opened daily from 9:00am to 3:00pm during the second week of the holidays. Over 80 Year 12 students took advantage of this opportunity, demonstrating a confident, goal-driven approach to learning.

Students engaged in focused revision, participated in mock exams, and accessed expert guidance from LHC staff—Mrs Perrier, Mrs Ferguson, and Ms Stirling—as well as past pupils and external tutors. Support was available across a wide range of subjects including English, Literature, SOR, Mathematics, Sciences, and Economics.

A highlight of the program was the introduction of student-led micro classes, where Year 12s taught key concepts to their peers using the Feynman technique—a powerful method that reinforces understanding through clear, simplified explanation. These sessions not only supported fellow students but also helped presenters cement their own knowledge.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 12 cohort. Their ability to set clear objectives, complete assessments, and plan for improvement reflects a group of young people who are well-prepared to take on the challenges of External Exams with resilience, discipline, and purpose.

A big thank you to all staff, tutors, and students who contributed to this successful initiative.
