As the school year draws to a close, Lourdes Hill College is delighted to announce our College Captains and the student leadership team for 2027.

This announcement reflects the College’s strong commitment to student leadership, with opportunities offered across Years 5 to 12 that encourage students to embody the Benedictine values of responsibility, humility and service.

The College is pleased to announce Sienna Ellero and Maddison Thomas as College Captains for 2027, succeeding the 2026 College Captains, Samara Ryall and Emma Casson.

Sienna and Maddison will be supported by a broader student leadership team comprising of Academic, Creative Arts, Reconciliation, Service, Spirituality, Sport and Health, Senior Middle School, Senior Junior School, Co-curricular, House, and Cultural Captains. The College also offers a range of leadership opportunities for Junior and Middle School students.

Maddison said she is looking forward to inspiring younger students and helping to strengthen the College community.

“For the past five years I have looked up to every cohort of year 12s before me and being named College Captain means I am able to make a positive difference to the younger cohorts,” she said.

“I want to build on the amazing sense of community we already have inside our purple gates. I really hope to make 2027 a year that other students look back on and say, ‘that was a great year’, filled with lots of pride and great memories.”

Sienna said one of her goals next year is to strengthen the connection across the College, especially between the older and younger students.

“This opportunity means a lot to me, as I see this beyond a role itself but rather a great chance to give back to the community as much it has given to me,” she said.

“I believe leadership isn't about having the loudest voice or being the person in charge rather it is about listening, being approachable and making decisions that benefit those around you.”

As they prepare to hand over the captaincy, Emma and Samara reflected on a rewarding year of leadership and service.

Emma said she was proud of the positive impact of initiatives such as the Purple Hearts student support program and whole-school events that brought students together. 

“Being College Captain has taught me so much this year. Notably, the way you make people feel and the way you connect with others, creates a lasting impact and is influential in shaping school culture,” she said.

“Through my captaincy I have become more confident in my communication and have learnt how to become more approachable. I am hopeful that through a smile or small chat I have positively impacted the lives of others.”

Samara said she was proud that her and Emma had created an environment in which students felt valued.

“Although implementing and continuing so many initiatives was incredible, having the opportunity to be a recognisable role model to the younger students is what truly makes the captaincy so special,” she said. 

“LHC is such a rare community in that no matter who you are or where you come from, all people have a place and fit together to create an environment of pride, kindness, and connection.”

After graduating, Samara is moving to Canberra to study a double degree in Law and Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) at Australian National University, supported by the Tuckwell Scholarship. Recently, she was recognised with a Secondary Schools Citizenship Award from the Order of Australia. Emma plans to study a double degree in Nursing and Midwifery.

The College wishes Emma, Samara and the Class of 2026 the very best for their post-school journeys and looks forward to seeing the new student leaders shine in 2027.
