Strategies for managing changing technology use and screen time on the holidays

Recent research highlights the risks associated with social media use, particularly for adolescents. Effective 10 December 2025, new Federal laws will require social media platforms to implement enhanced safety measures for users under 16. These regulations focus on platform accountability, targeting features that promote excessive screen time, exposure to manipulative content, reduced sleep, and increased stress.

However, it is important to know that not all technology platforms are affected by these laws, and students will still have access to tools for communicating with friends and family. It remains essential for students to know how to seek support for any online issues they may encounter. Throughout the year, Lourdes Hill College has provided students with guidance on digital wellbeing and safe online interactions through dedicated lessons and presentations from experts, including Headspace, the Police Liaison team, and the College’s wellbeing staff.

Parents and carers are encouraged to discuss the purpose of these new laws with students and to promote positive strategies for adapting to these changes. The eSafety Commission website offers comprehensive resources, including articles and videos on age restrictions, online safety discussions, and tips for safeguarding children, especially when introducing new devices.

Additional resources are available through the College Parent Lounge and the Parent App via the Parent Portal.
