Our Benedictine values of love of neighbour, community, hospitality and balance have been powerfully demonstrated this term though the inspiring initiatives led by our Year 12 students - the Ponytail Project and Time Out campaign.
A big congratulation goes to the 56 LHC Year 12 students who committed themselves to the 2025 Ponytail Project. This initiative, which raises awareness and funds for cancer prevention, saw our students raise an incredible $70,000 for the Cancer Council, alongside donating 56 ponytails to be made into wigs for those undergoing cancer treatment. Their compassion, courage and commitment was joyfully celebrated by the LHC community through a whole school assembly including parents, staff and students. A sincere thank you to the hairdressers who donated their time and expertise in cutting the Year 12 ponytails and the Cancer Council for attending the event.
It was wonderful to see over 300 students participate in the Time Out campaign, a Student Council led initiative. The Time Out campaign encouraged all the LHC community to take a step back and reflect on how we use social media in our lives, raise awareness of cyberbullying and the benefits of disconnecting from social media. We were amazed at how many students pledged to remove all of their social media, and excited by the feedback from our participants. In their reflections on the 2 weeks of reduced social media use, students have commented that they spent more time in nature, spent more time talking face to face with their friends and spent more time reading and indulging in hobbies.
The Student Council goals of reflecting, resetting and connecting through the Time Out initiative were certainly met, and we look forward to this initiative having a permanent place in our LHC community calendar.
As we head into the school holidays, I encourage all students to fill their time with activities that encourage reflection, resetting and connecting so they return to Term 4 ready for curricular, co-curricular and pastoral learning.
